Raleigh Plumbing GuideNotes for Triangle plumbing calls

RALEIGH GUIDE

After an ice storm in Raleigh

The Triangle does not live in a deep freeze. It gets ice, tree damage, and a sudden cold night that splits pipes which were fine all year.

What usually fails here

Outdoor hose bibs, washing-machine lines on an exterior wall, and supply pipes in a vented crawlspace are the usual victims. A vacant house with the heat off is worse. Interior pipes in a heated slab house often ride it out. Say which of those matches your house instead of saying the pipes froze as a category. If one already split, move to the first-hour checklist.

What not to do while you wait

Do not torch a pipe. That limit, and others like it, are spelled out in what not to take on yourself. Do not leave a failed bib running once you know it split. If you can reach the main shutoff without stepping into water, close it and open a faucet to relieve pressure. Open cabinet doors on exterior walls only after the heat is safely back, and skip that step if the cabinet is wet from sewage.

Power outage versus a broken heater

Ice brings outages. An electric water heater stays cold until power returns; that is not a failed element. See water heater trouble before you replace a tank that is only dark because the power is out. A gas heater that will not relight, or any gas smell, is a different call — follow the gas utility’s instructions and do not keep trying the igniter. Mention whether neighbors also lost power.

Prevention that is actually local

Before the next storm, disconnect hoses, cover bibs, and know the crawlspace shutoff if you have one. Insulating every line in a weekend is a project for a calm month, not something to improvise on a ladder during freezing rain. If a line has burst before in the same crawlspace bay, tell the plumber that history.

Questions people ask

Which pipes fail in a Raleigh ice storm?

Outdoor hose bibs, supply lines on an exterior wall, and pipes in a vented crawlspace. A vacant house with the heat off is at higher risk. Interior pipes in a heated slab house often ride out a short freeze.

Can I thaw a frozen pipe with a torch?

No. Do not use an open flame on a pipe, especially one you cannot see clearly. Shut the water off if a bib or exposed line has split, and wait for a plumber.

The power is out and the electric heater is cold. Should I replace it?

Not because of the outage. An electric tank stays cold until power returns. A gas smell or a heater that will not relight is a different problem. Follow the gas utility's instructions.

What is worth doing before the next storm?

Disconnect hoses, cover bibs, and find the crawlspace shutoff if you have one. Insulating a whole crawlspace is a calm-month project, not a ladder task during freezing rain.
