RALEIGH GUIDE
When you need an emergency plumber in Raleigh
Not every drip is an emergency. Water crossing a finished floor, sewage in a room you use, and a gas odor near a heater are. Here is how to steady the house and describe it.
What counts as urgent
Treat it as urgent if water is spreading across a finished floor, sewage is coming up through a drain or tub, a water heater relief valve is dumping steadily, or you smell gas near a gas heater. A slow trap drip with a pan under it can usually wait for daytime. In summer, also notice whether the air conditioner was running: a clogged condensate line can look like a sudden ceiling leak and is still worth a prompt call if water is reaching drywall, but it is a different description.
Shutoffs in crawlspaces and slabs
Know the fixture valve under the sink or behind the toilet, and the main shutoff where water enters. In older inside-the-Beltline houses that is often a crawlspace or a utility closet. In many North Raleigh slabs it is near the garage or a front corner of the house. Find it on a calm day. If you do not know it during a flood, say so instead of guessing which wall to open.
Ice storms, not week-long arctic cold
Raleigh winters are usually mild, then an ice storm drops limbs and freezes hose bibs and crawlspace lines that never see a deep freeze in a normal year. If a bib or an exposed line split, shut the water off. The ice-storm guide covers what usually fails here, and the first-hour checklist is the sequence once water is loose. Do not use an open flame on a pipe you cannot see clearly. If the power is out, an electric heater will stay cold until it returns; that is not the same problem as a ruptured tank.
Say where the house sits
Lead with the symptom, whether water is still moving, and that the house is in Raleigh, plus the neighborhood if you know it. Permit rules follow the jurisdiction of the address. Ask whether an after-hours diagnostic fee applies before you authorize work, and see what to check about permits once the water is stopped.

Write my service notesQuestions people ask
Should I shut the water off before I call?
Yes, if you can reach the main shutoff without standing in water or forcing a stuck valve. If you cannot find it, say that when you call. Do not open walls looking for a valve.
Where is the main shutoff in a Raleigh house?
Often where the service enters: a crawlspace, a utility closet, or near the garage on a slab. Some meter-box valves are meant for the utility. Learn the house valve on a calm day.
Is a wet ceiling after the air conditioner runs a pipe emergency?
It may be a blocked condensate line. It still needs prompt attention if drywall is getting wet, and it is a different description from a supply-line break. Say whether the cooling system was on.
What should I tell the plumber first?
What is wet, whether water is still spreading, whether you smell gas, and whether you already closed a valve. The house is in Raleigh. Add the neighborhood if you know it.
